Crews's autobiography about growing up in rural southern Georgia and coming to terms with that culture as an adult.

Portions of chapters 4 and 8, as well as 2,000 words apparently cut from the published version of A Childhood—in which Crews describes "wood sawing" and "peanut popping" parties, the custom of "walking out," and a revelation that "What was ahead of me was God and little girls"—were published in Penthouse [10.3 (November 1978): 128-130, 134, 220-222].
